2nd annual 5K race benefits Northside development, Earth

Runners and walkers from throughout Greater Cincinnati will converge on Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum on April 25 for Northside's second annual Reduce, Recycle, Run 5K.

The family-friendly race serves as a fundraiser for the Cincinnati Northside Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation, allowing it to continue its mission of increasing homeownership, eliminating blight, and preserving the neighborhood's historic character – all in a sustainable manner.

"Northside is definitely at the top of the list for local communities experiencing a wave of environmentally conscious redevelopment, from CNCURC and Working in Neighborhoods construction of three LEED-certified homes, CNCURC’s commitment to incorporating green features into their renovations, and many other examples of individuals bringing sustainable measures to their homes," says Libby Hunter, EcoBroker with Comey & Shepherd Realtors and Northside resident.

The event also "reduces and recycles" by requiring participants to bring their own water bottles, allowing them to donate their gently-used running shoes, and giving them the opportunity to get rid of their old cell phones in a responsible manner.

Sign-in begins at 7:30 A.M. at the Gwen Mooney Funeral Reception Center, . The race begins at 9 A.M.

Registration is required by April 21. Individuals may register for $25, and teams of 3-7 may register for $15 per person.

All entrants will receive a free T-shirt, and awards will be given to the top two runners in 13 age categories and the top two walkers in five age categories.

More than 300 registrants participated in last year's event.
