Early registration open for Paddlefest

Registration is now open for this summer's tenth annual Ohio River Way Paddlefest, the largest canoe and kayak paddling event in the Midwest.

The event kicks off June 23 with the Kid's Outdoor Adventure Expo, featuring hands-on learning on such topics as water safety, fishing, bird species, sustainable energy, gardening, and recycling.

On June 24, the Ohio River Music and Outdoor Festival comes to the picnic grove at Coney Island. In addition to the live music and refreshments, there will be a kayak fishing contest, cardboard boat races, kayak lessons, and a vendor fair and flea market.

On June 25, over 2,000 paddlers are expected to take part in the 8.2-mile float trip down the river. There will also be an 11-mile amateur race and a 14-mile professional race.

The event wraps up with music, vendors, and food at the Gold Star Chili Finish Line Festival at Yeatman's Cove.

Those who register before May 3 can save up to $5 on float or race fees and are guaranteed a rental canoe or kayak.

Ohio River Way also needs volunteers to help with registration, boat put-in and take-out, security, parking, and other duties.

All volunteers will receive discounted paddling, a volunteer T-shirt, free parking, and a goody bag.
