Building Value, Uptown Consortium to begin deconstruction today

Beginning this morning at 10 A.M., Building Value will begin the full-scale deconstruction of an Avondale building that will make way for a potential new mixed-use building.

The non-profit is working with the Uptown Consortium, ACT Recycling and Rumpke to carefully remove the one-story, 4,314-square-foot commercial structure at , with the goal of achieving LEED Platinum demolition standards by recycling or repurposing 90 percent of the building's materials.

Building Value plans to salvage many of the interior building materials and decorative architectural elements, making them available to local remodelers at its 23,000-square-foot Northside showroom.

Rumpke will mulch all of the building's unsalvageable wood; ACT Recycling will work to recycle the bricks and concrete foundation, the latter of which can be used to create concrete aggregate for road underlayment.

This is the 19th deconstruction project undertaken by the partnership of Building Value, ACT Recycling, and Rumpke.

Since 2009, Building Value has completed over 100 residential and commercial deconstructions of various sizes.

Many members of Building Value's crews face significant barriers to employment. Through transitional employment and job training with the non-profit, they are able to gain valuable experience in the construction trades.

Are you sure that is the structure that is being torn down today? I was informed that the structure being town down is this four-story structure a block down from where you're referencing.

That building's being rehabbed by Model.

I know the building across the street from this one is being rehabbed by Model, but I was not clear on this structure. The person I spoke to about this demolition project confirmed to me that this was in fact the building they were referencing. I will follow up and see what I get back.

Kevin,

I just got word back that you are in fact correct. I was misinformed by my source. Glad we're not losing that gem in Uptown that I linked to.

You don't go to Avondale much do you RS.
The small multi-story building you are both referring to was completed LAST year as was the tall one.
How about everybody go visit this area and continue a few steps North to the other end of this block, (ok, you don't even have to get out of your car), look to the right a little and you'll see one of the best Hannaford structures being allowed to fall into disrepair. It's criminal.
